A convoy of some principal officers of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife including the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede was on Monday attacked by suspected hoodlums in the host community.
The incident, IFECITYBLOG learned, occurred at Ede Road, a residential area around the University campus.
While the real cause of the attack remains sketchy as of press time, sources however claimed the University officials had attempted to visit a disputed portion of the institution's land at parakin area of the city when they were confronted by the irate youths who were said to be armed with dangerous weapons, preventing the VC and his entourage from gaining access to the site.
Reacting to the incident, the Vice Chancellor, Ogunbodede condemned the attack, saying the University and the Ife community have always been relating peacefully and will continue to uphold the peaceful coexistence as, according to him, the University cannot exist without the community.
“We will try as much as possible to continue to maintain peace because the university cannot continue to exist without the community. We will try as much as possible to continue to reach perfect understanding with the community. We have been doing it. We have succeeded over the years and we will continue to do it.", Ogunbodede said.
