Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike over what they described as non-payment of their earned academic allowance by the University management.
This was disclosed in a statement by the ASUU OAU Chairperson, Adeola Egbedokun, announcing the resolution of an emergency congress held by the union at the First Bank Lecture Theatre of the University on Monday morning.
ASUU in the resolution noted that the strike action is total and comprehensive, adding that there would never be a call off without a Congress resolution to that effect.
It further noted that the strike became necessary as the University management is not appearing to be committed to paying the EAA to the affected lecturers, adding that the union had exhausted all available diplomatic means to resolve the issue with the University authority without success.
“Congress noted that there was no serious commitment on the part of the University to effect payment of EAA to deserving members. Congress also noted that all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglia have failed. Consequently, congress resolved that:
“Total, Comprehensive and Indefinite Strike should commence immediately. The strike must not be called off without a congress resolution to the effect.
“Payment of EAA must be based on ASUU computation. Anything short of this would be unacceptable. The Strike Coordinating Committee be set up to monitor the strike.
“Based on the above and on the strength of the permission granted by ASUU National President, the Chairman, on behalf of the congress declared the commencement of ASUU OAU’s strike at exactly 11:53 am”. the resolution read in part.
Meanwhile, the University's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, when contacted said the University management is watching and would act appropriately later on the matter.
"Yes, like we said earlier it is a family matter. We are still watching the developments as they unfold to know the next step. Thanks so much,” Mr Olarewaju said.
