A Dental Therapist and Southwest Zonal Coordinator of Dental Therapists Association of Nigeria, Mr. Falowo Segun has advocated for improved dental care among rural dwellers in the country.
He stated this on Friday during an Oral Health Awareness Campaign held at Ooni's Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State as part of the activities ushering in the Association's 19th Annual General Meeting and Professionals Oral Health Conference slated for 3rd and 4th of November, 2022 at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife.
Lamenting on the poor attitude of people especially local inhabitants towards oral health, Falowo called for improved awareness and sensitization on the need to stay orally healthy particularly by taking preventive measures.
"I has been discovered generally that people don't care about their oral cavity. It is worrisome to know that some people even use their tooth brush for years something that shouldn't have lasted for more than three months before changing it.
This situation is due to lack of proper education and awareness and that is the reason for this campaign. It is aimed at creating awareness in people about their oral health and encourage them to take proper preventive dental care which but not limited to visiting dental clinic at least twice in a year for proper check up of their teeth.
"I will also like to use this opportunity to advise the government to create room for oral health at the local level. Creating dental health centres in communities for proper dental education and care will go a long way in reducing oral health issues among people", he concluded
The team of professionals was well received at the palace by the Ooni, His Imperial Majesty the Arole Odudua Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II for the one-day campaign programme which also featured free treatment for people from the community with dental challenges.
The conference theme "Repositioning Dental Therapy Profession In Nigeria" is among others aimed at creating advocacy for improved dental therapy training in line with the new career structure as well as creating the awareness on the need to promote preventive dental care in PHCs and rural communities.
