A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mallam Yusuf Ali has said that it will be a crime on the part of any Nigerian to reject the innovation of the Bimodal Voter's Accreditation System (BVAS) in the electoral process of the country.
Mallam Ali stated this in Ile-Ife on Monday while contributing at a lecture on the topic "Electoral Reforms: Is BVAS a Game Changer or a Mirage" held in honour of Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole(SAN) on his appointment as the 11th Vice-chancellor of the University of Ilorin.
He noted that voters' accreditation is an integral part of any electoral process which, according to him, forms the basis upon which the credibility of any election is determined, adding that BVAS has been introduced as a medium to solve series of challenges associated with this very sensitive aspect of electioneering based on its perceived sophistication and accuracy.
"Supreme Court has always maintained that over voting does not mean that the number of votes exceeds the number of registered voters but that the total number of votes exceeds the total number of accredited voters.
"However, the way our electoral jurisprudence stands, it has been difficult to argue the credibility of an election particularly on the basis of alleged over voting and this gave birth to BVAS."
The lecture organized by Ife Lawyers Association in conjunction with Law Students Society and Equity Chambers of the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife was where eminent personalities from the Bar, the Bench and the Academics dissected on the all-important subject of electoral reforms and other issues of national importance.
Some of the dignitaries in attendance were Hon. Justice Jimi Bada, Justice of the Court of Appeal and Chairman of the occasion; the Vice-chancellor Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife represented by the Deputy Vice-chancellor(Administration), Prof. Yomi Daramola; the Guest Speaker Mr. Shola Ojutalayo(SAN), Eleja Kehinde(SAN); Eleja Taiwo, among others.
