Student's Death: OAU Management Okays Protesters' Demands As Normalcy Returns Campus

It took the intervention of the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Wednesday to restore normalcy to the University community following the protest by some students over the murder of their colleague, Late Ahinze Okoli, a Part 5 Civil Engineering Student.

Some of the demands made by the protesting students include the closure of the Students' Union Building pending the conclusion of investigations; nomination of two members of the faculty to be part of the investigative panel set up by the Vice Chancellor; and enforcement of the University Code of Conduct with view to ending the "Scientific Maximum Shishi (SMS)."

The University management led by the Dean of the Students Affairs, Prof. Isiaka Aransi and the Chief Security Officer of the institution agreed to the demands of the students and appealed to them to be calm.

The news of Ahinze's death was made known in a release on Tuesday signed by the Students' Union president, Olayiwola Folahan. The deceased was said to had been assaulted in a mob action on the University campus the previous night after having been accused of stealing a mobile phone.

Many great Ife students have expressed displeasure over the sad development and called for justice to be served on the perpetrators.
