Osun State Governor, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, stressed the importance of early cancer detection at the 10th-anniversary symposium of the African Research Group for Oncology (ARGO) held at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.
Represented by Dr. Adekunle Akindele, Special Adviser on Public Health, Adeleke praised ARGO's founders, Prof. Olusegun Alatise and Prof. Peter Kingham, for their contributions to humanity.
Highlighting the event's theme, Prof. Isaac Adewale, the keynote speaker, remarked that early detection is crucial as cancer isn't a death sentence. He criticized Nigerians for seeking treatment abroad, emphasizing that Nigeria is equipped for cancer management. He called for increased awareness and media involvement.
Prof. Alatise, one of ARGO's conveners, thanked attendees and noted that ARGO, an approved Colorectal Cancer Consortium, aims to equalize cancer care in Nigeria with international standards. He emphasized the importance of training and equipping surgeons in Nigeria.
ARGO's mission, Alatise shared, is enhancing Africa's cancer care. By training healthcare providers, they aim to match the cancer care quality in developed nations.
Distinguished attendees included OAUTHC's Chief Medical Director, Prof. John Okeniyi; Obafemi Awolowo University's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Simeon Bamire; and representatives from top international and national cancer institutes.
