Nigerian metal wastes recycler and CEO of ScrapArt Museum Ile-Ife, Dotun Popoola has revealed plans to work with the Osun State Government on green economic development as he prepares for a synergy aimed at transforming the Onibueja dumpsite in Osogbo, the State capital into a sustainable urban park.
The internationally acclaimed synergetic metal sculptor and visual artist disclosed this while contributing to panel sessions at the just concluded 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference tagged COP29 held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Dotun in a statement shared key highlights of the conversation, particularly his contribution on the issue of climate change in Nigeria.
During his presentation, he shared his journey of transforming discarded materials into luxury goods valued at billions of Naira.
He highlighted his efforts in saving tons of waste from dumpsites and junkyards across various states in Nigeria and globally.
He further discussed his role in mentoring young recyclers and building a movement of environmental activists committed to sustainability.
"One of the major highlights of the conversation was my upcoming collaboration with the Osun State Government to transform the Onibueja dumpsite within the Osun Metropolis into a green hub.
"This vision aims to create a “Mini Disney” in Osun, utilizing resources within the state and supports from private sectors and the Federal Government of Nigeria."
"Special thanks to H.E. Governor Ademola Nurudeen for his interest in my body of work and for recognizing my contributions to reshaping Osun State.", he stated.
The sessions were attended by key stakeholders on environment including the State Consultant on climate change, Prof. Chinwe Obiaku, commissioners for environment, members of the Senate, among others.
