Pastor John Igbokwe, the Superintendent of the Ife District Coordinating Council (DCC) of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), has called on Christians to celebrate Christmas in moderation.
Speaking during an interview with our correspondent in Ile-Ife on Sunday, Pastor Igbokwe highlighted the need for restraint and prudence, citing the current economic challenges in Nigeria.
He noted that the ongoing economic downturn is not unexpected, as the Bible foretells that perilous times would come in the last days. He added that while other countries are also experiencing economic difficulties, Nigeria remains richly blessed.
"Our prayer is that the nation's resources will be better managed for the benefit of the masses," he said.
The cleric urged Christians to remain spiritually grounded, emphasizing that God is a spirit and those who serve Him must do so in truth and spirit. "Christians must strive to know the mind of God and live according to His will," he said.
Pastor Igbokwe advised born-again Christians to embrace self-denial as a way to prepare for life's challenges. He stressed that reliance on God, who is the author and finisher of their faith, is essential.
He further admonished Christians to live within their means during the festive season to avoid financial struggles afterward. "I encourage them not to overspend but to focus on what is necessary for the celebration. This will ensure they can meet responsibilities like paying their children's school fees when schools resume," he stated.
The pastor reminded Christians of their role as the light of the world, urging them to let their light shine in ways that promote peace, honesty, and community development. He warned against dishonest practices that could harm the nation.
He also encouraged believers to seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit, live holy lives acceptable to God, and continuously pray for peace in Nigeria.
Finally, he called on Christians to ensure the dividends of democracy are shared equitably and responsibly.
