Prof. John Okeniyi, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), has emphasized the need for a collective fight against corruption to enable Nigeria's progress.
Okeniyi made this call during an event organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. He stressed that combating corruption requires the commitment and effort of every Nigerian.
Dr. Musa Aliyu, Chairman of the ICPC, also urged Nigerians to actively join the commission in its fight against corruption. Speaking on the theme “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” Aliyu, represented by Mr. Hafeez Hassan, the Osun ICPC Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, highlighted how corruption undermines societal progress, hinders economic development, and obstructs good governance.
“Collective efforts are crucial in building a nation where transparency and accountability are prioritized. This will lead to sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all citizens,” Aliyu said.
He emphasized the indispensable role of youths in promoting transparency and shaping a future rooted in integrity. Aliyu encouraged young Nigerians to leverage their creativity, energy, and innovative mindsets to challenge corruption and advocate for accountability from public officials.
“Young people can disrupt the norm by fostering a culture of integrity and actively participating in governance. Their united stance against corruption will pave the way for a brighter future where ethical practices prevail,” he said.
Aliyu reiterated that a corrupt-free nation benefits all citizens and called on youths to commit to eradicating corruption and upholding ethical values.
In her remarks, the Osun State Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Adepele-Ojo, lauded the ICPC’s efforts in fighting corruption. Represented by Justice Yinka Afolabi, Adepele-Ojo urged youths to remain faithful and honest in their endeavors, advocating for a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.
Similarly, Prof. Ibrahim Bello, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Unit at OAUTHC, delivered a sensitization lecture, urging Nigerians to resist corruption within Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The event underscored the importance of collective action, particularly by the youth, in ensuring Nigeria thrives on ethical values and principles.
