In a historic ceremony held at the Oyo State Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde presented the certificate and staff of office to the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade.
The event, which took place on Monday, marked the formal installation of Oba Owoade as the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away two years ago.
During the ceremony, Governor Makinde emphasized the significance of the Alaafin stool, describing it as pivotal to the Yoruba race's cultural and historical identity.
Addressing the gathering, the governor said, "The Alaafin of Oyo stool is important to the entire Yoruba race. It is a symbol of our heritage, unity, and leadership."
Governor Makinde also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to preserving the sanctity of traditional institutions, condemning any attempts to compromise their integrity.
He warned those who exploit the system for personal gain, stating, "Those who collected money to destabilize our traditional institution will be prosecuted."
Oba Abimbola Owoade was announced as Alaafin-elect last Friday after a thorough selection process overseen by the Oyo State government and traditional council. The selection followed a two-year interregnum since the demise of the 44th Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, whose reign spanned over five decades.
The new monarch’s ascension has been met with widespread celebration and hope for a reign that will uphold the rich traditions and values of the Alaafin dynasty while fostering progress and unity across Oyo State and Yorubaland.
Oba Owoade’s installation has been lauded as a new chapter for the Alaafin dynasty. With his acceptance of the staff of office, the new monarch now bears the responsibility of leading the Oyo people, preserving their heritage, and promoting development in the kingdom.
As the Alaafin, Oba Owoade is expected to play a key role in resolving conflicts, uniting the Yoruba people, and ensuring the preservation of cultural practices in an era of modern challenges. His reign begins at a time of heightened expectations for both cultural renaissance and socio-economic growth in the region.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, and prominent members of the Oyo community, all of whom pledged their support for the new Alaafin in his quest to lead the kingdom into a prosperous future.
