The Federal Government has unveiled plans to scrap the Junior and Senior Secondary School system, replacing the current 6-3-3-4 structure with a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model before tertiary education.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the proposed reform on Thursday at the 2025 Extraordinary National Council on Education meeting in Abuja.
As part of the planned overhaul, the government is also considering setting 16 years as the minimum entry age for tertiary institutions.
According to the minister, the initiative aims to reduce dropout rates, remove financial barriers, and equip students with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, aligning Nigeria’s education framework with global standards.
The minister further explained that government has outlined key implementation strategies, including policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, teacher training, and curriculum enhancement to ensure a smooth transition.
