The Arole Oduduwa, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has joined the Yoruba people and advocates of democracy and good governance in celebrating the remarkable life and legacy of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away at the age of 96.
In a statement signed by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otun Moses Olafare, the Ooni described the late elder statesman as an unwavering champion of justice, equity, and true federalism.
He emphasized that, as a custodian of the Oduduwa heritage, he does not mourn but rather honors Pa Adebanjo’s indelible contributions to the Yoruba nation and Nigeria as a whole.
"Pa Ayo Adebanjo was more than a political figure; he was a guardian of Yoruba ideals and a relentless advocate for fairness and the true federalism upon which Nigeria was envisioned. His voice remained firm and resolute, serving as a moral compass for generations," the monarch stated.
A staunch Afenifere leader, Pa Adebanjo dedicated his life to the principles of democracy, justice, and the welfare of the common man.
His unwavering commitment to these values placed him among the most revered Yoruba nationalists, standing in the ranks of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and late Ooni Adesoji Aderemi, among other iconic figures.
The Ooni described his transition as a passage into the ancestral realm, where he joins the league of great Yoruba forebears. He prayed that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations to uphold truth, justice, and unity.
"The House of Oduduwa celebrates his legacy, praying that the ideals he stood for will guide our leaders and inspire the younger generation. May his soul rest among the noble ones of our land. Sun re o, Baba wa!" the monarch concluded.
