Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Monday conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the destruction caused by the recent communal clash between Ifon in Orolu Local Government Area and Ilobu in Irepodun Local Government Area, which later spread to Erin-Osun.
The violent conflict, triggered by a long-standing land dispute, led to the loss of lives, displacement of over 100,000 residents, and the destruction of properties worth more than ₦2 billion.
In response, Governor Adeleke swiftly imposed a 24-hour curfew on the affected communities and issued formal warnings of possible dethronement to their traditional rulers.
Accompanied by members of his cabinet, the governor spent about two hours assessing the situation firsthand, touring Ilobu, Ifon, and Erin-Osun.
Speaking to journalists after the assessment, Governor Adeleke condemned the violence, emphasizing that such unrest tarnishes the image of Osun State and hampers development.
“We have gone around, and as you can see, security operatives are deployed everywhere. The curfew has been effective, and I commend the security agencies for their efforts in restoring calm,” he stated.
He further lamented the persistence of communal clashes, warning that such conflicts hinder progress and discourage investors.
“This crisis has lingered for too long. When communities are fighting, there can be no development. People will be afraid to visit, and businesses will suffer,” Adeleke remarked.
“We have put several measures in place, and by the grace of God, peace will be permanent. I have given a directive for all culprits to be arrested and brought to justice. I will not tolerate further violence—too many lives and properties have been lost, and that is unacceptable.”
Osun State Police Command has begun enforcement actions, confirming the arrest of three suspects who were found in violation of the curfew and armed with a Dane gun.
Speaking on the security response, Osun Police spokesperson, SP Adeola Adeoye, assured that all perpetrators and their sponsors would be brought to book.
“So far, three suspects have been arrested for breaching the curfew while in possession of a firearm. A thorough investigation is underway, and those responsible will be prosecuted accordingly,” Adeoye stated.
The police command has also intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering to identify and apprehend all those responsible for instigating the crisis, ensuring that peace is fully restored in the affected communities.
