A 56-year-old woman, Adenike Okunrinmeta, has been remanded in the Ilesa Correctional Facility by a Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly obtaining ₦25 million under false pretenses.
Okunrinmeta was arraigned before Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara on Monday, facing a three-count charge of fraud and perversion of justice.
According to police reports, the defendant allegedly defrauded one Azizi Danjuma by falsely promising to assist him in procuring a United Kingdom visa.
The Police Prosecutor, Elisa Olusegun, informed the court that after initially securing administrative bail, Okunrinmeta failed to appear as required, leading to her re-arrest.
He further stated that the offenses contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her legal counsel, J.P. Jones, applied for bail, arguing that she remained innocent until proven otherwise and urged the court to grant her bail on liberal terms.
Opposing the bail application, the prosecution argued that the defendant had previously jumped bail and should not be granted another opportunity to evade justice.
After listening to both parties, Magistrate Ayilara adjourned the case to March 26, 2025, for a ruling on the bail application and ordered Okunrinmeta’s remand in the Ilesa Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.
