Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday, met with the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers in Osogbo to address the ongoing leadership crisis in the state’s local governments.
The meeting, chaired by the Ooni of Ife, Arole Oodua, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, was part of efforts to engage key stakeholders amid the controversy surrounding the leadership of local councils.
The crisis stems from conflicting claims about the rightful occupants of local government offices following a series of court judgments. While some political actors argue that a recent Court of Appeal ruling reinstated the previously sacked chairmen, the state government insists that no such order was given.
Speaking to the traditional rulers, Governor Adeleke presented court documents, maintaining that the sacked chairmen were removed based on two separate Federal High Court rulings, which declared their election illegal. He added that appeals against the judgments did not lead to any order reinstating the chairmen.
"In the 53-page judgment that is in the public domain, there is nowhere an order was made by the Court of Appeal for reinstatement of the sacked chairmen," the governor said.
The governor also blamed the recent violent clashes at council secretariats on what he described as misinformation and called for peaceful resolution of the dispute.
In their remarks, the traditional rulers commended the meeting and pledged to engage their subjects on the need for peace. They also resolved to communicate the outcome of the briefing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
The meeting is the latest in a series of consultations by the state government to address the tension surrounding local government administration in Osun.
