Cultural Honor for a Business Trailblazer: Chief (Mrs) Awodire Folasade Crowned Iyalaje Okemogun of Ile-Ife

In a historic and culturally vibrant ceremony held on Friday, April 4th, 2025, Chief (Mrs) Awodire Oladele Folasade Ige Adubi was officially installed as the Iyalaje Okemogun of Ile-Ife by His Spiritual Eminence Oba Isoro Oladapo Olafiranye, the Osogun Adimula under the supreme authority of His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife.

The newly conferred Iyalaje is widely respected in Ile-Ife and beyond as a successful businesswoman and an ardent promoter of Yoruba culture and tradition—qualities that undoubtedly influenced her nomination and elevation to this prestigious chieftaincy title.

The title of Iyalaje Okemogun is steeped in cultural and spiritual significance, representing the intersection of commerce, tradition, and spiritual stewardship in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba people.

Aje, the deity associated with wealth and market profitability, is revered across Yorubaland, and the installation of a custodian of this title reflects a deep spiritual and communal trust.

The ceremony commenced early in the day at the revered Okemogun Shrine, where sacred and age-old rites were carried out by the Osogun Adimula, the chief priest and spiritual custodian of the shrine dedicated to Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron and war.

Ogun, an important deity in the Yoruba pantheon, symbolizes strength, resilience, and productivity—qualities that echo the values of industriousness that Iyalaje embodies.

Osogun Adimula was joined by other high-ranking traditional figures and spiritual custodians such as Obadio, Obaluru, and Lokore, who collectively played essential roles in the sanctification and formal recognition of the new Iyalaje.

Following the shrine rites, the atmosphere transformed into one of joyous celebration as a colorful Orisha street procession took center stage.

Adorned in vibrant traditional attire, cultural enthusiasts, worshippers, and supporters accompanied the newly installed Iyalaje in a spirited procession that passed through significant cultural landmarks and concluded at the sacred Aje Shrine—a symbolic homage to the goddess of wealth.

Among the highlights of the procession was the appearance of the Arugba Aje, a young maiden bearing the symbolic vessel of the deity, adding spiritual depth and cultural symbolism to the entire ceremony.

The ceremonial train later moved to her residence, where the final traditional rites were concluded, marking the full assumption of her title.

The festivities reached their peak at a grand reception organized in her honor. The event was graced by dignitaries, family members, friends, business associates, and a cross-section of community stakeholders who gathered to celebrate the new Iyalaje.

Guests were treated to cultural performances, drumming, dances, and a generous feast, encapsulating the rich Yoruba hospitality and celebratory spirit.

In her remarks, Chief (Mrs) Awodire Oladele Folasade expressed profound gratitude to the Ooni of Ife, the Osogun Adimula, and the entire traditional council for entrusting her with the revered title.

"I feel deeply honored and humbled by this divine responsibility. It is more than a title; it is a lifelong covenant with my roots, my people, and the spirit of Aje herself. I promise to continue championing commerce, empowering women, and preserving our rich Yoruba heritage,” she said.

She further described the installation as a defining moment in her life, one she referred to as “a great fulfillment and an eternal source of happiness.”

"Today marks the beginning of a new chapter—one of service, commitment, and continuity of the legacy of our ancestors," she added.

The installation of Yeye Awodire Oladele Folasade as Iyalaje Okemogun of Ile-Ife signals a new era for traditional market leadership and cultural stewardship in the city.

As she takes on her role, expectations are high for the continued revival of indigenous commerce and the promotion of cultural consciousness, especially among younger generations.

Her story is one of vision, dedication, and service, making her an inspiring figure for many in and outside Ile-Ife.
