Lagos Fanti Carnival 2025: A Spectacular Homecoming of Culture, Colour, and Heritage

In an awe-inspiring return, the streets of Lagos Island came alive as the Lagos Fanti Carnival made its grand comeback on Sunday, April 20, 2025.

Hosted by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture at the Remembrance Arcade, Old Defence Road, the event marked more than a celebration—it was a bold revival of heritage, unity, and the enduring Afro-Brazilian legacy in Nigeria.

Dating back to the 1800s, the Fanti Carnival holds a unique place in the cultural identity of Lagos Island. Originally introduced by Afro-Brazilian returnees, it is an embodiment of diasporic reconnection and resilience.

This year's edition rekindled that historic flame, transforming the island’s streets into a vibrant canvas of colour, samba rhythms, and communal pride.

Celebrating Lagos’s Afro-Brazilian Roots Through Food, Art, and Dance

The 2025 Lagos Fanti Carnival stood out with its three major attractions:

Afro-Brazilian Food Showcase – A mouthwatering journey through traditional culinary delights, offering locals and tourists a taste of Brazil with Nigerian roots.

Heritage Art Exhibition – A curated space celebrating Afro-Brazilian artistry, history, and architecture, showcasing the creative genius that has shaped the character of Lagos Island.

The Grand Parade – A mesmerising display of dance, music, and masquerades. Samba-inspired drum ensembles and local cultural troupes lit up the streets with breathtaking performances, drawing thousands of attendees from within and outside Nigeria.

The carnival served as a melting pot of cultural exchange and expression, honouring the intertwined histories of Africa and Brazil through costume, rhythm, and community spirit.

The atmosphere was electric with joy and pride, as residents, visitors, and dignitaries immersed themselves in the spectacle.

The event highlighted the importance of preserving and celebrating Lagos’s unique cultural narratives, particularly the contributions of Afro-Brazilian descendants whose influence spans from cuisine to architecture.

"This is not just a festival; it's a renaissance," said a representative from the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. "The Fanti Carnival is a reaffirmation of who we are, where we come from, and the vibrant future we're building together."

Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who commended the organisers and participants, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting culture as a vital pillar for social cohesion and economic growth.

“The return of the Lagos Fanti Carnival is a momentous step in reviving the cultural heartbeat of our great city,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.

“Lagos is a city built on diversity and resilience, and this carnival represents the spirit of our people—vibrant, creative, and proud of our heritage. We will continue to invest in cultural tourism, not just as a means of celebration, but as a sustainable pathway for youth empowerment, community development, and global recognition.”, the Governor added

Driving Cultural Tourism and Boosting Local Economy in Lagos

Beyond celebration, the Lagos Fanti Carnival positions Lagos Island as a prime destination for cultural tourism. The event stimulates local economies, supports creatives, and reinforces the city’s role as a cultural powerhouse in West Africa.

By reviving this historical carnival, Lagos reopens a channel for cultural diplomacy and tourism exchange, inviting the world to witness and celebrate its rich Afro-Brazilian heritage.

The Future of the Fanti Carnival: A Growing Cultural Legacy

As drums echoed and masquerades danced, one thing became clear—the Lagos Fanti Carnival is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a living legacy. Its return signals a renewed commitment to cultural preservation, tourism development, and communal harmony.
